What is a koinophobe?

A koinophobe is someone afraid of living an ordinary life. The word comes from koinophobia, coined by John Koenig in The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It's also the name of our SEO agency, and here's why.

A koinophobe is a person with koinophobia: the fear that you've lived an ordinary life.

It's a newer word than it sounds, and it gets mixed up with a few others, so here's where it comes from, what it doesn't mean, and why it's on the front of our business.

Where the word comes from

Koinophobia was coined by John Koenig for The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, his long-running project of invented words for feelings that didn't have a name yet. He released it as a short video in 2015 with the definition "the fear that you've lived an ordinary life."

The roots are Greek. Koinos means common or shared. It's the same root as Koine, the "common" Greek spoken across the ancient Mediterranean. Phobos means fear. Koinophobe is the person, the same way an arachnophobe is the person with arachnophobia.

It isn't a medical diagnosis and you won't find it in a clinical manual. It's a word for a feeling a lot of people recognize: scrolling through other people's lives at 1am and wondering whether yours will add up to anything.

Koinophobia and koinoniphobia are different things

Search the word and Google will often hand you koinoniphobia instead. That one is a fear of rooms, or of rooms full of people, and Cleveland Clinic lists it as a specific phobia. Koinonia is Greek for fellowship or gathering, so the roots sit close together, but the meanings don't overlap.

Quick way to keep them apart:

Word What it means Root
Koinophobia Fear of having lived an ordinary life koinos, common
Koinophobe A person who has koinophobia koinos, common
Koinoniphobia Fear of rooms or crowded rooms koinonia, gathering

Koinophobe, the business

Koinophobe is also the name of our SEO agency at koinophobe.com. We do technical SEO, local search and call tracking for home service businesses: roofers, remodelers, pool deck and lawn companies, plus a few clinics and shops.

Why we picked the name

An agency named after the fear of being ordinary has to hold itself to that. Ordinary SEO is a monthly PDF of rankings nobody asked for, a checklist audit, and a vague promise about "visibility". We'd rather be measured on the numbers in your own Search Console and on how many calls your site brings in, and we put five clients' numbers on the work page so you can judge us the same way.

What it means for your site

The name fits the work too. Most small business websites are ordinary in the same handful of ways. A template homepage that says "quality service you can trust". One page trying to cover every service and every town. No tracking on the phone number, so nobody knows which calls came from Google. Google treats that kind of site the way you'd expect, and it ends up on page three.

What gets a site off page three is rarely clever. A page for each town you work in. Titles that say what you do and where. A Google Business Profile that agrees with your website. A way to count the calls. The five case studies on the work page show what that looks like in Search Console numbers, including the parts that didn't move.

If you came here for the word

That's the definition, the root and the lookalike. If you came here because your own site is stuck on page three, the prices are here and the intro call is free.
