Brand mentions and AI search: how assistants decide which companies to name
AI assistants named the same companies Google ranks far more often than they cited the same pages. That makes being recognized across the web a bigger part of AI visibility than any single page. How to build it.

The strongest pattern in our September 2026 citation study wasn't about pages at all. It was about companies.
When ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews answered buyer questions, they cited the same pages Google ranked only 2% to 12% of the time. But they named the same companies 34% to 54% of the time. They largely agree with Google, and with each other, about who is credible. They disagree about which page to quote.
For a business, that changes where to spend effort. Being recognized across the web may matter more than perfecting any one page.
Why recognition matters to an assistant
An assistant writing "good options include..." needs confidence that a company is real, relevant and well regarded. It gets that from many places at once: your site, your listings, reviews, articles that mention you, comparisons that include you. A company named in twenty places for the same thing is an easier recommendation than one that only describes itself.
Our study also found citations were concentrated: the top ten companies took 58.3% of all assistant citations, against 47.7% in Google's organic results for the same questions. AI answers reward the companies already known, more than search does. Getting known is the way in.

Where mentions come from, by type of business
Every business
- Your own site, saying plainly what you do and where.
- Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect.
- The directories people in your field use.
- Reviews, with detail.
Local businesses
- Chamber of commerce and local business associations.
- Local news, community sites, sponsorships with a page that names you.
- Supplier and manufacturer "find an installer" or dealer listings.
- Neighborhood groups, when customers recommend you.
Software and online businesses
- Comparison sites and roundups in your category.
- Integration and partner directories (the app stores of tools your customers use).
- Product launch sites, community forums, podcasts and newsletters in your niche.
- Documentation and GitHub, for developer tools.
Professional services
- Professional association member directories.
- Expert quotes in trade and local press.
- Speaking pages for events and webinars.
Make the mentions consistent
A mention only helps if it's recognizably you. Use the same business name, the same description of what you do, the same phone number and the same address or service area everywhere. "Smith Dental," "Smith Family Dentistry" and "Dr. Smith DDS" on three sites look like three businesses to a careless reader, human or machine. Cleaning up listings walks through it.
Also describe what you do the same way. If your site says "commercial roofing" and your listings say "general contractor," you're harder to place.
How to earn mentions without gaming it
- Ask for inclusion where it's legitimate. Most roundups and comparison sites have a submission or update process. Send accurate facts.
- Give press something real. Data from your own work, a clear opinion on a local issue in your field, a useful guide. Reporters quote people who make their job easy.
- Partner pages. Suppliers, software you integrate with and associations often list partners. Ask.
- Reviews. Ask every happy customer, and make it one tap. Detailed reviews name your services and towns.
Avoid paid link schemes and fake reviews. They break Google's spam policies and FTC rules, and they're the kind of signal that gets discounted.
How to see whether it's working
Ask assistants about your category without naming yourself: "best [what you do] for [type of customer]." Then ask directly: "What is [your business] known for?" Run each a few times in fresh sessions; answers move a lot between runs. Track it monthly with this method. Rising mentions with flat citations means assistants know you and are quoting someone else's page about you, which tells you what to write next.
Next steps
List every place your business is mentioned today, then the ten places your best competitor is mentioned that you aren't. That gap list is your plan.
Our AI search optimization service works on both halves: the pages assistants cite, and monthly tracking of whether they name you. $1,000 a month, no contract.
Frequently asked questions
Do brand mentions help with AI search?
Everything we've measured points that way. In our September 2026 study, assistants cited the same companies that ranked on Google 34% to 54% of the time but the same pages only 2% to 12% of the time. Being a company the web recognizes mattered more than any single page.
What counts as a brand mention?
Any page that names your business: directory listings, review sites, industry roundups, local news, supplier and partner pages, podcasts, forum threads and social posts. Unlinked mentions still help a system connect your name to what you do.
How do I get more brand mentions?
Claim and complete your listings, get included in the roundups and comparison sites in your field, give local press and trade publications something worth covering, and ask happy customers for detailed reviews.
